Julie Ali Laura Funk gets it far more than Mr. Trudeau does. The problems in the continuing care system in Alberta are not being addressed. Underfunding results in poor staff:resident ratios as well as poorly trained staff. If we raise concerns we are told that we can always hire extra private help. But then what about other residents in the same facility? And why should we be paying for extra staff when we are already paying for accommodation charges? Aren't we also paying for the health care costs through our taxes? I was told that there was no complex care in Alberta and my question is why not? Why does the system consider my requests for individualised care for my handicapped sister with disabilities to be impossible because such an "idealised" system of care is not achievable? Families are not satisfied with the continuing care system and are speaking out. We get retribution for such speech. Currently in Grande Prairie yet another family is finding out that the system is so afraid of family advocates that they will ban them. https://www.facebook.com/stephen.tucker.334 Stephen Tucker with Tammilee Rideout-Tucker and Juanita James. Instead of this useless day of recognition Mr. Trudeau could do real work by:
1) Suggesting to Alberta Health that they amend the Trespass to Premises legislation to include an appeal
2) Suggesting to Alberta Health that there be visitation rights enshrined no matter what happens in terms of retribtion?
3) Directing federal health care dollars at the continuing care system and not just the home care solution?
4) Asking for accountability for our taxpayer dollars of the health departments in the area of continuing care?
5) Asking for protections for advocates who face retribution such as lawsuits?
6) Providing federal funds to advocates who are sued like Ruth Adria of the Elder Advocates of Alberta society?

Caregivers need more than a national day of recognition

    MORE STORIES FROM THIS EPISODE

One in four people in Canada care for a loved one, friend or neighbour.
And earlier this month the Prime Minister recognized the millions of Canadian caregivers who help support someone with in their lives, by declaring April 4th to be National Carers Day.
But Laura Funk, an Associate Professor in sociology who studies aging and health care, says carers in this country need more than a day of recognition.
Funk says one of the most common issues she hears from caregivers is the struggle to access formal care services for the person they are supporting — and she says that issue encompasses a complex and multifaceted problem.
The quality and quantity of existing formal services is actually, I believe, a key determinant of carer stress. And the more integrated and transparent a system you have — the more coordination you have within that system — it becomes easier for caregivers to navigate.  And that's not currently the case with our existing healthcare systems — they are highly complicated and difficult to access.- Laura Funk
As a result of the critical role caregivers play, Funk says the health care systems have come to rely heavily on them.
"I would emphasize though, that even when these formal services are provided, it's not like the carer steps back and does nothing. In some ways they can step back and be the daughter instead of the caregiver, but they continue to be highly, highly involved in providing different kinds of support ...so it's not like they do nothing when formal services are in place."

Canada's aging population is real, but to Funk, it's not a reason to throw up our hands and say we can't do anything.  In fact, she says, there is a lot of good research to show that integrating and coordinating health care can be both more cost-effective and helpful to older adults and their families.

My husband has a deteriorating and chronic lung condition. He is on O2 all the time. We can go out with his portable tanks but it is a struggle. He is mentally capable but needs psychological support as do I. It is very stress full. My mother just died at 102 so that has been stressful as well. I need counselling or moral support. Our kids are great but too far away to help much. Even getting doctors appointments is a challenge. Emergency is out of the question. Too many bugs to pick up while a five hour wait.« less

Time for more than a day of recognition.
Time for visitation rights and residential tenancies rights for residents and protections for advocates and carers.
    We need action.

--- #MediaAttention------ #SocialMediaChangesEverything-----------yes the government of Alberta acts against us and calls us the enemy--------Stephen Tucker with Tammilee Rideout-Tucker and Juanita James. April 27 at 6:36am ·---------A VERY SAD DAY YESTERDAY!! Thanks to our justice system and to a care home in grande prairie Alberta . My dad was forced to go to court yesterday only to have him and my mom seperated once again due to my dad being my moms voice . The home banned my dad to be allowed on the property for a full year as we know it now. All my dad did was protect mom day in and day out of the non care she was missing at the home of missed food feedings catheter plugs for nine hrs and the list goes on and on with plenty of pictures and documents to back it up . All I want from this post is for it to go viral to stop the abuse in homes and to stop the banning of partners because they are there only voice in a lot of situations when the victim cannnot speak or move for herself. Please share this post and any help we can get to reunite my mom and dad would be apprieated . They don't deserve this as our justice system is so messed up .so the latest news at the hospital is that they will not hold her at the hospital and will be forced to take her to the care home that abuses her or to the apartment dad lives in !!how wrong is this-

and I laid down the truth
    in documents
    layer upon layer
    so that I could say

    and when I spoke
I said what happened to my handicapped sister
how doctors at the Grey Nuns Hospitals
put a do not resuscitate order on her

    year after year
because she was a disposable citizen
I spoke about the failures by Alberta Health
and AHS      how oversight was by the family

I spoke about the audits that were done
the quality reviews we never got
and the cover up that continues
    to this very day

yes I spoke of these matters
and I laid out the documents
and the events that I witnessed
so that other families would know

    that we are alone
    we are so alone
    that the government of Alberta
uses a Trespass to Premises law

    to forbid us visitation rights
    to our own families
    yes the government of Alberta
acts against us and calls us the enemy
